In the two marun after we’d been spied upon, we went out three times to gather herbs and plants. Not that Hyme needed them—Teger just wanted to test his spy theory. Hyme went with us twice. The first time he came with us, we were followed. The second time we weren’t. The third time, Teger and I went out alone, and our spy came along.

“It’s Prag,” he said while I lay in his arms that night. “I spotted him hiding behind a tree.”

“So now we know who it is and why. The only question now is who’s behind it.”

“Right. Oh, that reminds me. I want to show you something.” He got out of bed and retrieved a small box from his closet. “Look.” Pulling out a soft green bag, he upended it, and a small, slim silver rectangle fell into his palm. “This is a recorder. I bought it at Wyn’s shop today. I told him I’d be recording Council meetings and wanted something really good. He showed me this—it’s the best this company makes. And it’s expensive. See that slot? That’s where the disc goes. It comes with software, so you can play back your vid on a computer or hook it up to a projector and play it on a big screen. And the microphone is really sensitive. I tested it by setting the recorder on the tripod I’d bought on one side of the room and from the other, whispered a childhood rhyme. The mic picked it up loud and clear.”

I held out my hand. “May I?” He gave it to me. Inspecting it, I peered into the disc’s slot and examined the button controls. “I’ve never seen anything like this.”

A sly smile appeared on his lips. “Well, we are pretty backward up here.”

My eyes widened. “Wait, I didn’t mean—”

He laughed. “I know. Just teasing.”

I gave him a look. “Anyway, you’re saying something like this would have picked up every word we said.”

“Most likely. But what’s important is Wyn told me Prag bought the same model just over two marun ago.”

“How’d he pay for it?”

“Cash. He’s been telling everyone an elderly aunt died and left him an inheritance. Nobody believes him, but his parents aren’t denying it.”

My brows shot up. “So you think his parents are in on it, too?”

“No. The Harsts don’t have a lot of money, and I think Prag is paying them to keep quiet.” He put the recorder away and returned it to the closet. Then he climbed into bed and cuddled me.

“Do you think the Council will want your sessions recorded?”

“Don’t think so. I just said that so Wyn wouldn’t think I was prying.”

The apartment was quiet. I blew out a heavy sigh.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m scared, Teger. Aren’t you?”

“Of course. But we can’t let fear paralyze us. This is a game, älskling. The hunter and the hunted. And Prag’s the hunter.”

“Some game. The stakes aren’t win or lose. They’re life or death.”

“Yes, but in this game, the roles can switch. The hunter becomes the hunted.
